Poker is the name of a popular card game, one of the many that can be played with a standard set of playing-cards, in a casino or online. A deck of cards has 52 cards and two jokers – normally used as a wild card in a poker room. Different from other card games, poker is a vying game, meaning that the players don’t have to empty their hands by playing their cards out. Instead, they can replace some of their cards – but not all – in order to try and get a winning combination.
It is also a betting game. Players place their first bets even before the game itself starts, and keep betting until someone wins, with the highest combination using five cards. No matter how many cards are dealt, they must start and end with five cards only. However, if there is something that people don’t agree on it is when this game first appeared. There is some evidence that, in the 15th century, the German game known as Pochspiel incorporated some of the rules the Poker game has today – the betting, the hand rankings and bluffing. Others have also found many similarities with a Persian game called As Nas.
Some historians also have been studying other games that closely resemble poker, like the French game Poque, the Irish Poca or the English Bragg. Another French game, the brelan, could also be one of the very first forms of poker. The current form of poker is also likely to have appeared in Mississippi, in the United States.
No wonder this game is to Americans as bingo is to the British – a popular entertainment that can be played by nearly everybody. Although its rules seem to be more complicated than bingo, it’s still an easy game that people also play for fun. It is said the game was rapidly spread out to the rest of the country by the riverboats, where that would be great tournaments as early as the 19th century.
